Writing Jobs Online 2011

Writing Jobs Online 2011

The Internet is a great place for English majors or people who have a knack for writing. Finding writing jobs before the days of web content was a lot more difficult, usually requiring regular employment with an ad agency or copy writing group. Occasionally, you could find short-term writing jobs in the want ads.

The Internet is a visual medium, for sure, and text is as big a part of the visual experience as graphics. All that text has to be written by someone, why not you? Finding writing jobs online in 2011 means looking for the work where it is posted, learning to churn out quality content, and always being on the lookout for more writing opportunities.

Here’s some help in finding writing jobs online.

Writing Jobs Online 2011

Writing Jobs from Home

The biggest benefit to finding an online writing job is that you do the work on your own time. You’ll have deadlines, as with any job, but you can do the work in between cooking, studying, working out, or whatever your usual home routine is.

Any writing job you find online is likely to be an “at-home” pursuit, though some ad agencies do hire through online applications. Working from home isn’t for everyone. As writers, we have artistic temperaments, a tendency toward laziness, and an overall air of disorganized thinking. Still, if you have any kind of work ethic, being your own boss should work out far better than reporting and answering to some oaf with an MBA.

Writing Jobs for Teenagers

Another great benefit of finding writing work on the Internet is that for the most part these jobs can be filled by people of any age. Teenagers still living at home finishing high school or starting college can get writing work online and finish it in between class or other part-time work. Even the lightest online writing work load brings in cash–spending money for the weekend or gas money for the commute, however you want to spend it, the money’s yours.

Taking a writing job online teaches young people about money, time management, and trains them by forcing them to use their writing skills. There’s plenty of work at the larger web content job sources that’s good for teenagers–there’s plenty of assignments at TextBroker that can be completed by a younger person, though large houses like Demand Media usually require more experience and education than a teenager is likely to have.

Finding a writing job online as a teenager is a matter of finding the right assignments and the right clients, people who see being a teenager as a benefit and not a liability. There’s many fields where a “young” perspective is perfect.

Writing Jobs on Craigslist

Your first searches for writing work on the Internet will take you to many sources. Start with your newspaper’s want ads. This is the least likely spot to find advertisements for writing jobs online, but you have to start somewhere. Look for phrases like “Articles Needed” or “Writers Wanted”, etc.

Inevitably you’ll find yourself searching on Craigslist for online writing jobs. This isn’t a bad idea–using Craigslist, you can search the want ads for writing work in many different markets–since the writing will be done from your home, it doesn’t matter if the client is in LA or Moose Foot, Montana.

Be careful with anything you find on Craiglist. Talk to the client, make sure you’re dealing with a real person and not a scammer or phisher. Never give personal details on Craigslist to people you don’t know.

Entry-Level Writing Jobs

For people who are just starting in the field of writing, finding truly “entry-level” work may seem really hard. Craigslist and other want ads may have turned up a dozen writing jobs, but all of them ask for “experience” or, worse yet, a college degree.

The key to finding entry-level writing work is to understand that you’re not going to get all the benefits and high pay of a more experienced writer. Accept that you’ll have to do some grunt work and gain some experience before you get the kind of writing job you’re after.

Freelance Writing Jobs- Education Required

If you have a college degree (or even better, a post-graduate degree) you can pretty much take your pick of online writing jobs. Services like TextBroker and Demand Media look at things like degrees and work experience as proof that you’ve paid your dues and will take a little extra time with your application.

If you haven’t yet tried it, check out the student newspaper of a college or university near your home. These will likely be full of ads for writing work needed, whether it is help with student papers or a freelance client looking for new writing talent. The ads in student papers tend to demand experience and education. The good news is that writing jobs that require experience and education tend to pay much better than entry-level work.

Getting writing work online requires work ethic and (eventually) some education and experience to improve your pay and your client base. People with self-discipline will find online writing work as rewarding financially as it is fun. Creating unique web content and seeing it online is a great moment of pride for writers, no matter their experience or how many degrees they have.
